Can historical episodes of social conflict exert long-lasting effects on individual wellbeing and social preferences? This study investigates the enduring impact of the 1984–85 Miners’ Strike in the United Kingdom. We survey individuals with personal or familial ties to mining communities affected by the strike, measuring current levels of wellbeing, emotional states, and social preferences. To identify potential causal pathways, we examine how the act of recollecting memories from the strike period influences reported outcomes. Our findings will contribute to understanding the long-term psychological and social consequences of social conflict, outside the context of armed confrontations.
